The Mammoth Raft is the sports car of the rafting world. Splashy and fun, you get more air time off the rapids. Our mammoth raft received its name from the two tusks out the front. This raft fits 6 people as opposed to 8, and is 2 x lighter! With a mesh bottom that doesn’t touch the ground the mammoth slices through the water much faster, and everyone is SOAKED!
When it comes to river rafting, BC has a lot to offer. Each season brings varying intensity to the rapids we raft on. After winter is finished, the snow melts from the surrounding Rocky Mountains and our early rafting season begins in May. This is an exciting time as the snowpack run-off causes the river to swell and the intensity of the rapids increase. This is a great time of year for thrill-seeking whitewater rafters looking to get a ‘splash to the face’! This time of year the water temperature is quite cool, but we provide all the necessary gear to keep you warm, exploring and smiling.
During May and early/mid June, we are out rafting on the beautiful Bull River, a splashy class3 river in a remote location. As the water levels drop we transition to the lower Elk River, we have age limits in place to ensure the safety of all of our guests. The section of the Elk River that we raft is a 16km stretch of class 4 to mellow class 1 rapids, tucked into the Phillips Canyon is where you’ll get the opportunity to do some cliff jumping. Late summer the age limit goes to 6 years or 50 lbs. Early July is a great time for river rafting in BC because the temperatures start to rise, particularly in the South Country where the trip takes place. Plus, during this time the height of the water will still be fairly high, and you will enjoy fast running rapids. In August and September the water levels and wave heights drop, which creates a family-friendly whitewater rafting experience, especially for kids and for first-time rafters.
Water levels change throughout the year, if you are rafting with youth under the age of 15 please inquire with our team for appropriate dates as we have age cut-offs throughout the year.

To Expect
Trips depart from our office in Fernie at 9 am, where you’ll sign in,get your river gear, and jump on the bus for a short(30min) drive to Elko where you’ll get your first view of the river and canyon walls. At the put in, you’ll have an opportunity to go to the toliet before putting on the rest of your river gear. You’ll meet one of the guides who will pass out the multipurpose paddles and walk you down the 300+ steps to the river. This is where you’ll begin the 16km journey of wilderness and white water, in the raging elk canyon as it carves its way through the Rocky Mountains.
After a thorough safety briefing, you’ll load into the rafts with a paddle in hand. Your guide will do some paddle command training with you before you enter into the first class 4 rapid of the day. After some seriously fun splashes we’ll stop for a delicious riverside picnic lunch, and you’ll have a chance to chat with your friendly and knowledgable guides, if needed there is wilderness toliet with a view. After lunch we proceed into the deepest section of the river, the Phillip’s Canyon where you’ll have the opportunity to cliff jump. Once the jumping and swimming is all done, we continue along, taking in the breathtaking scenery of the epic canyon walls and the abundance of wildlife, particularly the majestic bald eagles, the last stretch of the river mellows out which allows for lots of river games. If you’re on the Elk Canyon trip your whitewater rafting experience will come to an end at Lake Koocanusa where the river feeds into the lake. From 2:30-3:30 PM, the bus will be waiting to take you back to Tunnel49 base, where you can view all the photos from your epic adventure.
